Meat-and-Cheese Spaghetti Sauce

Basic spaghetti sauce

I’m making spaghetti tonight, and this is my basic recipe. If the grandkids weren’t here, I’d be making a spicier version and adding peppers and mushrooms. This recipe has a lot of garlic in it because we love garlic! If you don’t, reduce the amount or leave it out entirely. We also like lots of meat in our spaghetti sauce!

Holle’s Meat-and-Cheese Spaghetti Sauce recipe

What you’ll need:

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large Vidalia onion
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 5 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup grated Romano cheese
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 bay leaves

Directions: Place ground beef and onion in a large Dutch oven and brown. Salt and pepper. Drain off fat.

Stir in remaining ingredients and reduce heat to simmer. If sauce is too thick, add a little water. Place the lid on the pot and simmer for at least thirty minutes. I usually simmer mine longer.

If you want a thicker sauce, simmer without the lid. Stir occasionally.

Remove bay leaves and serve over pasta.
